Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged calm ahead of the imminent implementation of 25% tariffs on Mexican products, announced by the US government.
«Let’s wait, let’s wait. We must not create uncertainty,» Sheinbaum said during her morning press conference.
She emphasized that her government is well-prepared and has multiple strategies in place to tackle the situation.
«We must remain calm, patient, and collected,» she stated, revealing that Mexico has a «Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, and Plan D.»
Sheinbaum: Mexico Is Ready for Any US Decision
The president reiterated that Mexico is prepared for any outcome.
«There is no reason to panic. Whatever decision is made, we have a plan, and there is great unity in Mexico. That is very important,» she said.
Sheinbaum also stressed that Mexico has honored its commitments and remains in close communication with the U.S. government.
«We have made the necessary agreements and coordinated efforts, but ultimately, this decision lies with the United States,» she added.
Regarding the fight against fentanyl trafficking, Sheinbaum claimed that there have been significant advances since her administration began on October 2, 2024.
She stated that fentanyl seizures in the U.S. have decreased, attributing this trend to her government’s efforts.

«Coordination, not subordination,» she emphasized, underscoring a key distinction in Mexico’s relationship with Donald Trump’s administration.
To support her claims, Sheinbaum presented a graph showing that U.S. fentanyl seizures have dropped by half compared to last October.
Sheinbaum Highlights Cooperation and Urges Patience
“This past month has seen excellent collaboration and coordination. The meetings involving the security cabinet, the foreign minister (Juan Ramón de la Fuente), and trade officials in Washington have been very productive.”
Sheinbaum reiterated the importance of waiting for the U.S. resolution before taking further action.
«Whatever happens—whether it’s one decision, another, or something in between—we must remain calm,» she concluded.
The potential impact of tariffs is raising concerns across key industries, including textiles, automotive, medical devices, and agriculture.
Business leaders have strongly opposed these tariffs, warning that they could harm both economies and disrupt the USMCA trade integration.
